| Westside Football
Our Westside coaches are by-products of the local high school football programs and as they teach what they learned from their years in playing for Northwest, Southeast, and Dalton High Schools, our local high school programs continue to prosper. Many of our Westside youth teams run the same offenses and defenses run by Northwest High School and Westside Middle School, and as they transition from Westside Youth Athletic Association Football to middle school and high school football, they have operated under the same offensive and defensive schemes for 8 years or longer. However, in WSYAA football, all youth are given the same opportunity to play in every game. As these boys grow and mature it is very impressive to see them develop their skills over the years, and when they step onto the field at Northwest it's always enjoyable to reflect on how far they've come. Football requires a great deal of hard work and dedication from not only the youth, but also the parents. Youth who play football require encouragement, support, and recognition of their positive accomplishments from parents. When a young player simply "gets in the way" to slow a tackler down, they must be recognized by parents and coaches. Football, more than any other sport, is a team game and it takes longer for youth to understand how important their contribution is to total team efforts. Parents can help by ensuring their children maintain a positive attitude and recognize all the things their child does correctly. Sometimes, it's difficult for 1-2 coaches to watch 15-16 players and recognize everything that is done correctly. Also, most boys prefer that they be recognized by their parents for things they do correctly. The more recognition they receive, the harder they try, and the faster they develop. Football is also a youth sport which enables a greater number of parents to get actively involved in direct coaching. There is always something for an interested parent to help with on the practice field. Even if a parent doesn't understand football, coaches need people to (be) block(ed) or parents to be placed in positions, so the offense or defense can look at game-type line-ups. WSYAA actively encourages parents to participate in any way they can. |
