| Player Drive TimeOne of the biggest concerns that we continually voice to Whitfield County Commissioners is the amount of time required of our Westside Youth and Parents to drive to neighboring parks for practice. The following is an actual drive for one of our Youth from his home to Edwards Park, the location of all of his Tee ball games in 2006. Notice the ONE-WAY Drive time of 39 minutes from his front door to Edwards Park. A second Parent at this meeting had a 42 minute drive-time (ONE WAY) using this same Yahoo direction tool. Below is a drive-time map to each field from the Westside area Even more critical is the time at which these drives to/from practice occur. Because of the of the lack of availability of Westside Fields, elementary age children are often driving from cross-town practice facilities at 9:30-10:00 PM on school nights. Perhaps this is a primary reason many Whitfield County Schools personnel are solidly behind this grassroots effort. We are thankful to area churches and local landowners for donating the use of grassy areas and the many Kangaroo Stations for the donation of restroom facilities to make practices possible.

One Way Drive Distance to Practice FacilitiesAs you examine the Geographic layout of the current Parks structure, most fail to realize that a Mountain separates access between Westside, Dug Gap, and Valley Point. This enlarges the geographic coverage area of the Westside Athletic Association. While some youth may be 4-miles (as the crow flies) from Dug Gap or Valley Point Parks, they must travel North to Mill Creek (the proposed Westside Park site) to access a cross mountain road. While it seems easier to petition for highway money to build more roads across the mountain, it does not solve the current issue of no restroom facilities at Westside Middle School, No Handicap access in Violation of ADA requirements, two fields for 26 teams, poor/non-existent drainage and numerous safety concerns related to on-site conditions. Both the Recreation Department and the School Board are each in lose-lose situations. The recreation Department refuses to allocate any restoration funds for fields it does not own (rightfully so), and the Board of Education cannot justify repairing two fields caused by wear and tear of 26 recreation league teams (also rightfully so). However, even in repairing facilities and fields that have fallen in disrepair from neglect would not create additional field space for 26 teams. Meanwhile, Westside (Recreation) allocated funds are being diverted to other more deserving (?) communities.
