Westside Athletic Association Announces Westside Fields Project
The Westside Athletic Association, a volunteer parent organization involved in organizing and promoting Whitfield County youth athletic programs, has announced the launch of their effort to bring adequate Athletic Facilities to the Westside Area. The announcement of this effort coincides with the launch of their new website (http://wsyaa.com). The website offers an online petition form in which website visitors can complete an online petition, with their comments, which is automatically emailed to Whitfield County Commissioners.
Currently, West Side Youth have only two practice and game facilities with more than 26 Spring teams (2006). Current facilities offer no functioning restroom facilities, have no handicapped accessibility, and afford numerous safety concerns. Current facilities, owned by Whitfield County Schools, have fallen in disrepair, with no Recreation Department budget allocation for repair and improvement.
The plan for a Westside Fields complex was actually approved in 1996. Land was purchased at the Westside landfill, yet the land stands idle. While County Government has recently began discussion of the construction of a Rodeo Complex with riding trails at Edwards Park, the Westside fields project remains a low priority despite a higher impact for a larger number of Whitfield County residents. The Westside Elementary School is the largest elementary school in Whitfield County in student population (see graph on web site) and is among the fastest growing schools in the county, yet no plans have been approved for anticipating the future needs of this community’s youth.
The Westside Youth Association encourages other Westside Communities and other interested Whitfield County residents, who must travel to Westside for scheduled events, to assist in this effort by visiting the Wsyaa.com website and completing the online petition.
