Proposed Site

A number of exciting things were in the works for the Proposed Westside Park. However, some things have changed with regard to a primary benefactor completely funding the project.  It looks as if our dreams may not become a reality in the near future. A yearly endowment will be established to serve a variety of community groups rather than WSYAA, only. We hope that an endowment will be established so we can reapply for a yearly grant.

It has been rumored that the land originally purchased for construction of Westside fields (landfill property) has been sold to a developer.  If this turns out to be true, the Westside Community hopes our county commissioners will earmark proceeds from the sale of this property for the original purpose it was intended. Once another piece of propert is obtained, we think we can build basic fields for about $20,000 each.  This is not much for the amount of enjoyment received by the kids and the community.  A field that can service 50 kids per day for 50-75 years provides a real and lasting benefit to any community.

As we look at what Columbus, GA, Albany GA, Warner Robins, GA, and Valdosta GA have done with their youth programs, it's no wonder their teams reach the Little League world series each year and go on to college and professional athletics. Famous players like Ray Knight, J.D. Drew, Moises Alou, and Tim Hudson developed from these programs. Each player returned to their birthplace to live. Their local governments have made significant contributions to these programs to ensure first rate facilities and youth development.  Many of these players (like Ray Knight and Nancy Lopez-Knight) continue to support their local parks through coaching, coaching clinics, and cash contributions.   Despite playing professional baseball on the All-star level, each player reflects on their time in youth athletics as the happiest days of their lives and they returned to their birthplace to ensure that their children had the same experiences.

Help us by getting involved in the Westside Athletic Association.  Meetings are held on the 2nd Sunday of each Month at the Westside Middle School Concession stand.  As you look at the 70-something acre plan below, complete with tennis courts, walking trails, bike paths, football and soccer fields, it should make you proud (finally) that our children and families will have a safe haven to enjoy family activities.

We need active involvement from the community as we move forward in making other plans to secure satisfactory facilities for our overburdened Athletic program.
