| VolunteersYouth Athletics thrive and survive through volunteers. Whether these volunteers coach, run concessions, or drag chains on the sidelines during football games, Westside youth programs could not continue to function without them. Volunteer OpportunitiesThe life blood of the WSYAA is volunteers. We receive no federal or local government funding of any kind. In fact, the WSYAA actually grew from the inability of local government to properly fund a quality athletic program. Volunteerism amounts to more than simply coaches. In order to function completely and independently of woefully under funded and mismanaged local government funded youth athletic programs, we must utilize volunteers for every phase of operations. While coaching youth teams always seems to be the high profile position, it often comes with its own unique challenges. Most Westside Teams have 4-6 parents actively engaged in each team assisting the coach with teaching duties, but for every coach there are generally 7 or more unseen volunteers for each team that make sure all of the other pieces fits. We are in the initial discussion stages of planning a Westside Days Youth carnival to coincide with Team Picture Day in 2008. This could be our biggest fundraiser of the year and a great time to be had by all. We are seeking volunteers to assist with the organization of this event. We need ideas for booths, vendors for cotton candy, hot dogs, soft drinks and other food items, game ideas for kids to participate in and staff to handle the gate admission and other duties. This is a community carnival, but we may draw from other communities, as well.. If you know of anyone that owns a concession cart and would like to participate in this carnival have them email their contact information to vendors@wsyaa.com We are also seeking volunteers who can take on the task of organizing one booth and getting the booth ready for the carnival (staff, tent, all supplies, etc). For example, we have a local hairdresser who has volunteered to do face painting, temporary tattoo's and crazy spray painted hair. She will organize everything need to put the booth together for the carnival. We would suggest you work with other parents on your Team or a couple of Teams to organize the booth. If every Team organized a booth, it would be the biggest Carnival in Whitfield County.
