Welcome to the West Side Cubs Team Web site!

The 2007 Cubs area can be found here. Our 2008 Westside Cubs area is now active

The West Side Cubs are simply the best Youth Baseball Team ever!  The Cubs are based in Rocky Face, GA., on the Westside of Dalton, GA. The Westside Cubs are an 11 year-old Youth League Team, but many of our players are playing up as 10-year-olds.  Many of these players do not turn 11 until after the 2008 season concludes. A number of our players have been playing together since Tee Ball and we plan to continue playing together, as a team, until some of us are eligible for the Major League Baseball draft, which is only about 7 years away.

Major league baseball (and a few Grandparents) requested that we build this website, so they could keep track of our individual stats, Cubs team statistics, Cubs game schedules, practice schedules, and (most importantly) our growth (size) progress. (Our growth can be more easily tracked by looking at the 2004, 2005, 2006, and 2007 Cubs photo's in their sections at the left.)  MLB insisted that this makes it easier for their team scouts to get discounted airfare in order keep an eye on our progress.  However, we do require that major league scouts contact us prior to attending any scheduled event, simply because we limit the number of scouts attending any event to two per event (we have limited parking and no working restroom facilities).

The 2008 Edition Westside Cubs will see plenty of new faces and this will probably be our last year together as a team.  These new players should recognize the pressure that will be placed on them to uphold the Cubs tradition.  The Cubs have always been one of the best teams in the County. The 2008 Edition Cubs will mark the 6th year that the Cubs have been together as a team, and while the faces change slightly each year, the Cubs always have fun. Winning the 2007 Whitfield County Championship was a difficult task and a difficult act to follow for the 2008 Cubs

The 2003 Edition was a Tee Ball team, and since we didn't keep score, we were undefeated.

The 2004 Cubs was our first year in Coach pitch and we were 8-3. This was the the first year that we used the Cubs name.

The 2005 Cubs were 9-1-1 with only one brawl (which was a tie-were it not for Kim Ownbey's assistance, we may have lost this one.  Actually, when the brawl began Kim grabbed her things and headed to the parking lot to make sure our cars were OK, but "on a team" everyone has their responsibilities).

The 2006 Edition Westside Cubs finished the year at 11 - 2.  Both losses came in the same week and were heartbreaking losses.  This was rain-out week, and the rescheduled game forced us to play the three top teams in the county (besides the Cubs) during this week.  The previous rainout worked in some teams favor because their weekly reschedule was actually easier than the Cubs Schedule, so they came loaded for bear (rather than Cubs) with their best pitchers still available.  If these other three teams had each played our schedule this week, it would have been an interesting week. However 3 losses in 3 years is fairly impressive and with Tom Glavine working with Logan, Greg Maddox working with Drew, and John Smoltz working with Jackson our pitchers should be able to throw longer this year.

The 2007 Cubs lost one regular season game and one playoff game (both to Dug Gap).  With their backs to the wall, our Cubbies came back to beat Dug Gap twice to win the Championship.  It was much more dramatic than it sounds.  After Dug Gap scored 4 runs in the first inning on a Grand slam down the third base line, our cubs kept battling back.  In the bottom of the last inning, down 4-runs with two outs, our boys scored 5-runs to win the championship 7-6.  It was great to see all the other Whitfield County community teams at the game wearing their Cubs hats and t-shirts showing their support.

The 2007 Cubs went 12 - 1 during the regular season, 5-1 in the County Championship Tournament, and won the 2007 Whitfield County Championship.  It was a spectacular end to a spectacular season, scoring five runs in the bottom of the last inning with 2 outs to win 7-6 over Dug Gap.  It was one of the best games you would ever want to watch in youth baseball.  If not for the other community team coaches standing behind our dugout giving our boys encouragement, our boys probably would never have thought they could win against a very, very good Dug Gap team.

The 2008 Edition Westside Cubs have rather large shoes to fill.  Each player will have to work hard to polish their skills in order to finish the year strong.  This will require not only attending each practice and working to learn every position on the field, but also includes plenty of practice at home.  Our most improved 2007 Cubs worked with Mom and Dad between practices.  Baseball is an acquired skill.  While many players have natural ability, these players have developed their skills through practice. Dakota Ware and Trey Hasty have been training since September and we can't wait to see how they have improved. Dakota was by far our most improved player in 2007 and when playoff time came rolling around, he began to hit the ball with authority.

In 2008, 11 Year Old baseball will change significantly from what we have seen in the past.  Hitting will win Championships. Opponents will strikeout less often and our fielders must learn to catch the ball (as they did in the Championship game) and where to throw the ball to get an out.  Our hitters will begin to see more hittable balls and they must learn to make contact with the ball.  Fielders will still be a little behind the batters this year and those batters that put the ball in play will get on base and score runs.  Batters cannot expect to go to the plate looking for a walk because pitchers will be throwing alot more strikes.  Our pitchers will not appear as dominating, but our fielders should help them get them out of more innings by making the proper play.  This is when baseball becomes fun.  Our coaches will be able to bunt more often and put in special plays in the outfield.

2007 Team Stats

2008 Team Stats

Our team roster remains fairly stable, since we have players who request to be on the Cubs each year.  If a parent wants their child to play for the Cubs, they must specify either the Coaches name or the Team Name on the Green Registration Card completed at the beginning of each season. This helps with the continual teaching process that we try to build on from year-to-year. We try to accommodate parents who share rides to/from practice and specifying a team with friends/neighbors helps get more participation in youth sports. If they choose to be placed on another Team they should not specify a Team or specify another coaches name or player name.  Often parents put another child's name on the green card, so the boys can be grouped together for ride-sharing purposes.

Each player now has their own page. Also, you should be able to bring up your boys personal page by entering their name in the MSN or Google search box.  Google and MSN love our site and keep constant check on how our boys are doing.
