WSYAA Mission

Our Mission

Article II of the Constitution and By-Laws of the Westside Athletic Association states “….the community is the backbone of our American way of life, and that upon its strength depends the future of America, and that the greatest handicap to building and maintaining a strong rural community is the difficulty of getting a group of rural people representing all sports, interests and segments of the community together regularly, so that problems affecting the community may be systematically and thoroughly considered…..”

We are now faced with an issue that indeed needs systematic and thorough consideration.  This issue is the lack of recreational facilities and athletic fields in the Westside community.  Because of this lack of facilities, athletics are becoming a detriment and hindrance to the lives of our young people as well as our families, instead of being a positive influence that sports is intended to be.

How is the lack of athletic facilities detrimental to our youth?  Our families?  Our community?

1.      Families / youth are currently traveling 30-45 minutes (one way) to practice.

2.      Youth are practicing at times that are not appropriate for their age.

3.      Youth teams are utilizing facilities all over the county and the sense of “community” is dying.

4.      Our facilities are unsafe.

5.      Basic necessities and / or resources for the handicapped or anyone with special needs are not currently being met.

Why Westside?  Other communities need additional facilities as well.

1.      Westside Elementary has the largest population of students of any elementary school in Whitfield County.

2.      Westside had the highest number of spring sports teams than any other community in the county (2006).

3.      Not only does Westside currently have a disproportionate number of fields, but the fields we do have are shared with the middle school, which has priority for those fields.

4.      One field was eliminated during the additions / remodel to the middle school and not replaced.

5.      Because of the sharing of these facilities between the Whitfield County Recreation Department and the Whitfield County Board of Education, no new moneys or resources are committed to improve existing facilities.

6.      What other community has kids traveling 40+ minutes (one way) to practice?

7.      Several new subdivisions and developments are underway in Westside, and the issue of athletic / recreational facilities is a natural part of this continued growth.

A grass-root effort is underway to bring these issues to the forefront of the minds of not only you – the people of Westside – but to our elected leaders as well as others in leadership positions.  The ultimate goal of this effort is to have a recreational complex built in the Westside community to improve the experiences of our youth as well as improve the overall quality of life for the citizens of Westside and Whitfield County.  Our intermediate goal is to provide information and data to all parties involved to show that this endeavor is not only necessary, but demanded.

How can you help?  An online petition is now available.  This petition will be used as a way to show our elected officials and the leadership of various decision-making and planning functions that this topic is at the forefront of the minds of the citizens of Westside.  The submission of your data and comments within the petition will be sent directly to each of our county commissioners and will be used to advance this endeavor. We encourage you to include comments with each petition you submit.  Including comments communicates to commissioners that you understand the issues involved.

Thank you in advance for your support of Westside athletics and the youth of our community.  Updates will be added to the Westside Athletic Association website (www.wsyaa.com) as opportunities and events arise or warrant.  Your comments and ideas are welcome.
